SEA FISHERIES

Fishing from ships takes three forms:

1) SUSTAINABLE Local creel fishing for prawns (Nephrops norvegicus) and diving for scallops.

2) VARIABLY SUSTAINABLE Trawling the water column for fish.

3) HARMFUL Dredging the sea bed for prawns and scallops. Causes massive damage to sea bed habitats and reduces the effectiveness of creel fishing and scallop diving/ranching.

All three are carried out in the South Skye sea lochs. We wish to promote creeling and scallop diving, gain some sensible control over trawling and exclude the dredgers.
